Disney removes all ties to fox’s x-men franchise in latest cut of ‘the new mutants’

Disney/Marvel Studios/whatever is left of 20th Century Fox have been reworking the film, in hopes of making some financial return on Fox’s investment. Disney was reportedly “unimpressed” with the original cut of The New Mutants, but recent test screenings of the film have been a bit more positive. This new cut of the film is said to be more in line with Josh Boone’s original “horror-esque” vision for the film.

A source close to FandomWire has stated that Disney and Marvel Studios have intentionally cut any ties to Fox’s “Singerverse” (i.e. Fox’s Marvel franchise) in The New Mutants. Additionally, the idea of “being a mutant” won’t be exactly mainstream.

These changes were made in case Kevin Feige decides later he wants to bring The New Mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The story is set within a secret facility that experiments on mutants, and the main character (Blu Hunt’s Danielle Moonstar) doesn’t know she is a mutant or the meaning of the word (mutant). Moonstar is brought to the facility after an attack by Demon Bear.

The hints to other X-Men movies most likely had to do with the Essex Corporation that was set up in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016). For you comic fans out there, this is the name of the evil corporation led by Nathaniel Essex A.K.A. Mister Sinister. Mister Sinister is rumored to be the man behind the curtain in The New Mutants. Jon Hamm was initially set to portray Mister Sinister in a supposed post-credits scene that was eventually cut.

Even before getting her cinematic debut, Magik was intended to have a role in Drew Goddard’s X-Force movie. So with the movie now being developed at Disney, we wonder if Anya Taylor-Joy’s version of the character will continue her journey there.

(Spoilers: Deadpool’s Colossus was originally intended to appear in New Mutants looking for Illyana, but that was scrapped and later brought on to might be add in future reshoots.)

No connection to the X-Men
Just like Deadpool the movie has no connection with the Fox run of the main X-Men movies giving more chances to them to get introduced in a future MCU movie.

The New Mutants will hit theaters (hopefully) on April 3, 2020. The film is directed by Josh Boone and stars Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar, Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie, Henry Zaga as Sunspot and Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane. The New Mutants is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
