NY teen kills five drag racing and only receives 6 months in jail

A Long Island teen who challenged another driver to a drag race that ended in five deaths — then mocked the justice system on social media — was sentenced to just six months in prison on Friday, officials said.

Cory Gloe, 19, of Farmingdale, was considered a youthful offender when he was sentenced on five counts of manslaughter on Friday, officials said.

Besides the six-month prison stint hammered out during a plea deal, Gloe was also sentenced to five years probation.

The decision didn’t sit well with the families of the victims — all Farmingdale High School students, Newsday reported.

“How many passes will Mr. Gloe receive?” Sandy Lonnborg, the mother of 14-year-old victim Carley Lonnborg, asked at court Friday.

Gloe was facing up to 22 years in prison if convicted at trial, officials said.

When he pleaded guilty in March, he posted an Instagram selfie outside court with a message cursing police. That same day, he also allegedly posted messages on social media including, "I'll be in and out faster than you can spin a doubt."

Prosecutors wanted a one to three year sentence, but Suffolk County Judge Terence Murphy backed the plea deal, claiming that such a long sentence would leave Gloe “mentally broken” and force him into a gang.

“Don’t waste your life,” Murphy told Gloe at court, according to Newsday. “You were spared.”

Gloe was arrested after he pressured 17-year-old Tristan Reichle into drag racing against him in Farmingdale on May 10, 2014.

Reichle and his four passengers, - Lonnborg, 18-year-old Jesse Romero, 15-year-old Noah Francis and 17-year-old Cody Talanian, were all killed when Reichle lost control of his Nissan Sentra and struck an SUV not involved in the race. Two occupants in the SUV were also injured.

Gloe apologized before hearing his sentence.

“I’m reminded of this every day, and I will be for the rest of my life,” he said. ”I take full responsibility for my actions.”
