A Long Island gym teacher and wrestling coach was busted this week for having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a former student, according to police and a new report.
Thomas Barton, 54, of Medford, who teaches at the North Middle School in Brentwood, was busted around 4:45 p.m. Friday for the illicit relationship with the 16-year-old girl he had taught, according to Suffolk County Police.
Barton was charged with third-degree rape, third-degree criminal sex act, and endangering the welfare of a child, authorities said.
“The employee has been administratively reassigned from his job responsibilities and is prohibited from entering school grounds,” Brentwood schools superintendent Richard Loeschner told Newsday.
District officials are cooperating with the investigation, Loeschner told the paper, adding, “The safety of our students is our top priority.”
Barton had worked at the district for 30 years, a representative told the outlet.
Police confirmed he taught physical education, and 2018 school board meeting minutes obtained by Newsday list him as a wrestling coach.
His arraignment is expected Saturday.
