Police officers in Mississippi reportedly shot and killed a mechanic in his home after attempting to serve an arrest warrant at the wrong address.
Ismael Lopez was mortally wounded while standing in the doorway of his mobile home off Surrey Lane around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, WREG reported.
Prosecutors said the officers from the Southaven Police Department were looking to arrest his neighbor, Samuel Pearman in connection with an aggravated domestic violence incident. The suspect lived across the street from Lopez, who had no warrants out for his arrest.
The 41-year-old victim and his wife were asleep when authorities arrived at their door, KSN reported.
In a press conference Monday, John Champion — the prosecutor serving DeSoto and four other Mississippi counties — said the two officers were startled by a pit bull that ran out of the house upon their arrival.
Champion, while emphasizing that details are still unclear, said one officer shot at the dog and “while this was going on, they also noticed at the time that a gun was pointed outside the residence.”
Officers allegedly continued on to order Lopez to drop the weapon, though neither the victim’s wife nor his neighbors heard any such requests.
Lopez’s family attorney, Murray Wells, confirmed the victim did have a gun but did not have it when he opened the door. He told NBC the firearm belonged to Lopez’s son and that it was discovered on the couch with no blood on it.
Wells and Lopez’s wife have pushed back against authorities’ description of events.
“Bullet holes suggest they shot through the door,” Wells told UPI.
The officer who killed Lopez was placed on leave and authorities have not yet detained Pearson. The Tate County Sheriff’s Department has called on him to turn himself in, according to WREG. He’s accused of choking a woman at a Citgo gas station parking lot.
A similar incident occurred last summer in Georgia. William Powell, an Air Force Veteran and father of three, died after being shot in the neck by a Henry County officer, who showed up at the wrong address.
