Two bodies were found inside a burning vehicle at around 2 a.m. Friday morning on the 500 block of East 28th Street, Paterson Police Capt. Richard Reyes said in a press release.
After the fire was doused, detectives were called to the scene to conduct a homicide investigation, Reyes said. Reyes did not say what led police to investigate the incident as a homicide but residents recalled hearing gunshots before the car burst in flames.
The car was removed from the scene Friday afternoon but broken glass, police markers and charred snow could be seen where it once stood.
Residents said they awoke early Friday after hearing the commotion of fire and police sirens outside their windows at around 3 a.m.
Despite seeing the fire, they were unaware of the two bodies.
Closter Police say a recent car break-in has similarities to a national criminal organization known as Felony Lane Gang.
"I looked out the window and saw the fire," said Rudolph, a resident who only wished to give his first name. "I've never seen anything like this."
Reyes said the bodies were taken to the Medical Examiner's office for identification.
As news broke of the homicide investigation, Thurston Anderson came to the scene because he believed his missing son might be one of the people found in the car.
"I'm hopeful that this isn't him," Anderson said.
Police are encouraging anyone with information to call the detective bureau at 973-321-1120.
