Girl stabbed in face with scissors during fight at Middlesex Vo-Tech

EAST BRUNSWICK -- A student at Middlesex County Vo-Tech was hospitalized Wednesday after she was stabbed in the face with scissors during a fight with another girl, officials said.

The fight at about 8:50 a.m. was an isolated incident between two students, but school officials ordered students to stay in their classrooms, Middlesex County Vocational Technical School District Superintendent Brian Loughlin said.

The student with the scissors, who allegedly started the altercation, was immediately taken into custody, Loughlin said.

"We didn't want kids to observe the medical treatment of a fellow student," Loughlin said of the decision to keep students in current classrooms for an hour and 25 minutes at the East Brunswick campus.

The girl was stabbed in or near her eye, Loughlin said. She was taken to University Hospital in Newark, according to Loughlin.

"We wanted to ensure that every precaution was taken," Loughlin said.

The father of the 15-year-old girl who was stabbed told NJ Advance Media Thursday afternoon she had been released from the hospital and was doing OK.

"The stab didn't touch the brain," he said. "But it's too early to tell if there was any nerve damage because of the swelling. Her eye is stitched shut."

The father, who is not being named to protect the girl's identity, described the incident as an attack on his daughter over a boy. He said the prosecutor's office told him county authorities would charge the other girl.

It was not known if charges were filed against the student. East Brunswick police spokesman, Lt. Sean Goggins, referred all questions to the prosecutor's office.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's office did not immediately respond to emails for details.

Parents were notified of the incident through the district's emergency calling system.
